  • fortune8 · 1 year ago
    True !!!

How many companies are letting go thousands on thousands of jobs?

What will that do to the unemployment?
  • michaelD · 1 year ago
whats it already done for unemployment? the best part is that the offshoring is a failure; its cheaper but for some reason the quality of the product is damned low. but co's keep opening their subsidiaries over there. works really well for the CxO's though. they get more and more money squeezed out of the corp. its not like any savings are passed along, right?

and, yes, this is all first-hand. watched it from up close at my FORMER employer.
  • fortune8 · 1 year ago
    I am back !!!

2 hours to go and leaders (SIGM,DRYS,FSLR,STP) are still leading.

ag continues to get hit as suspected and still holding out on MOO

    PBW is negative.

I did not see JASO hit 54+, now that is bad. beanie and I had this sucker shorted just 2-3 days ago.

I am looking at AAPL again and see if I can get some at 160+

President Bush: economy has a solid foundation, but some areas of concerns; there is a risk of a down turn

    - Says Package should be big enough to affect economy, feels it should represent 1% of GDP, be temporary, and take effect immediately, should not include any tax increases
    - Package must include incentives for business, including small business
    - Notes there is enough support in Congress to pass the package
  • troyhouse · 1 year ago
Why are they still taking the market down?
  • contrarian · 1 year ago
Did I call it yesterday on the politics? *DJ Bush: Repeats Call To Make 2001, 2003 Tax Cuts Permanent

Dems will hate that -- they love to tax everything. That will force a stall, even if the package goes through - there'll be plenty of resistance. And the Republicans probably don't want this market smelling up the whole year . . . so what do they care if the market drops a little. It'll find the bottom that much faster.
  • contrarian · 1 year ago
OK Bush isn't forcing the tax break to be part of the Stim Package.

"In a concession that could help speed the process of implementing a stimulus plans, the White House said it would separate its campaign to make Bush's 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent from the stimulus negotiations.
Ê Those talks still face some obstacles with Democrats pushing for increased spending on food stamps and unemployment insurance benefits.
Ê White House spokesman Tony Fratto said the administration and lawmakers aren't far apart on the stimulus.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told CNBC Thursday that a deal could be done in around 30 days. Ê "That would be my outside limit, because, again, every day around the kitchen table people are feeling this hardship," Pelosi said.

Also, I have a suggestion for looking at stocks in these conditions, that doesn't rely on traditional methods. We've been down a couple of days and had a brief rebound. So use that to find the stocks that are the strongest. Take a 3 day chart, and draw a trendline from the lowest point two days ago, to the lowest point now. If it's trending up, like LDK, GRMN, SOLF, CSIQ, etc. you know you're lookng at strength finding relief. If it trends down, like AKNS, ASTI, ESLR, EMKR, etc. you know it's a stock that won't bounce as fast on a good day. It's not rocket science, but it can give you insight into a stock's strength that is being disguised by the market.
  • fortune8 · 1 year ago

Beanie and all the members of the room,

I hardly watch Cramer's Mad Money however tonite I did and I strongly urge all to watch or go online and watch. The issue with the mkt currently (since most of us have been puzzled about all of the technical violations we have been seeing) is that all of the major players know that the all of the mortgage insurers have written policies in significant excess of their exposure to the tune of approximately 500 BILLION !! As you have seen with mortgage companies quickly becoming bankrupt (e.g CFC) this could happen overnite to the insurers. Wallstreet knows this.. I give Cramer credit for being gutsy (and nutty) enough to expose this on his show tonite.... He additionally challenged the current administration to do something with Bernanke in that he (Bernanke) has no clue.... I agree. If these insurers begin to run out of money, which could happen overnite, we will see a 2000 point correction overnite !!!! With all due respect to the members of the room, whom I respect.... I have bought and sold numerous companies and worked in venture capital on wall street years ago.. this is a time to be extremely cautious... What can we do ? Write, call your congressperson.... I am..... The Fed is on a serious disconnect.... We need a 100 pt basis cut currently, but to do so, in my opinion... would erode confidence and prompt economic hysteria.... I hope this information helps everyone in the room in making prudent financial decisions...... success to all..

Beanie, take a look at TNDM. recent IPO that is profitable. I have yet to take a position as it keeks taking off on me ...even in this market. Read the news or my post earlier today. Put it on your watch.

I had one of my best weeks this week. I did short the MON today but barely was up due to my audacity in trying some long scalps. I keep tight stops though due to my share purchases.and have to sell before EOD as I don't hold anything overnight right now. Later.

I keep hearing all this crap about the $vix and ne fear in the market.....lol..

There are other fear measures besides $vix. Case in point:
there is 1 new high today in the nyse. and a whopping 4 in the nasdaq. I have never seen these numbers this low ever. Throw in crazy high CPC and TRIN ma's, and super-high new lows.
Oh and 5 out of 6 nasdaq stocks are below their 200 MA; 4 out of 5 in the NYSE. Seems there are sufficient markers to indicate fear.

    Puuuleease.

    You are absolutely correct.

VIX just happens to be my favorite indicator.

So far VIX has not made a top.

How many incorrect attempts have there been in calling the market bottom?

Eventually someone will get it right because the probably that everyone is 100% wrong is 0%.

Actually, the above is not an accurate statement because 100% can also be wrong.

Microsoft Expected To Post Strong 2Q Net >MSFTLast update: 1/18/2008 7:21:33 AM

    By John Letzing
Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is expected to post significant profit and sales gains when it reports fiscal second-quarter results Jan.24. Analysts, on average, expect Microsoft to report earnings of 46 cents a share, on $15.9 billion in revenue for the period ended in December. When Microsoft reported its first-quarter results in October, Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell announced that the company was "slightly ahead of where we want to be." At that time, Microsoft raised its full-year guidance for profit and sales.

Here's Briefing's stock ideas from the last two days. I like TNDM's action. Briefing turned me on to SOLF as an idea a long time ago at 8 bucks or so BTW......

Stock Idea Generation: TNDM, RZ -Update : Here is a quick summary of stock profiles we published since yesterday's close (Hint: Enter the co's ticker or PROFX in the Ticker Search box for the full version of these profiles and for an archive of older profiles)... Neutral Tandem (TNDM): This is a recent IPO on few radar screens, it announced important customer win this week and it has first-mover advantage among its competitors. Also, we like that the stock has held up in a weak market and it has a tiny float (6 mln shares)... Raser Technologies (RZ): The co announced a deal today with Merrill Lynch on a 155MW geothermal development financing program. Raser is an interesting name that few investors know about. Geothermal is not as well known, but it's an emerging alternative energy technology with a lot of potential.

17-Jan-08 11:08 ET In Play Neutral Tandem (TNDM): recent IPO on few radar screens, announced important customer win; has first-mover advantage (20.41 +0.06) : Neutral Tandem (TNDM) is a small cap telecom equipment maker that made an important announcement this week that pretty much went unnoticed: it signed Verizon Wireless as a customer. For some background, the co provides tandem interconnection services for telecom providers. Historically, the primary method for carriers to exchange traffic with other carriers was using incumbent local exchange carriers', or ILECs, tandem switches as required by the Telecom Act of 1996. TNDM allows carriers to bypass an ILEC tandem. Prior to the introduction of TNDM's services, competitive carriers had two alternatives for exchanging traffic between their networks: 1) interconnecting to the ILEC tandems (which is expensive and increasingly difficult to manage as data rates increase and competitors are using the same tandems) or 2) directly connecting individual switches, known as "direct connects" (but this requires high captial and operating costs making them uneconomical for all but the highest traffic carriers). To solve this, TNDM launched its service in Feb 2004 to allow competitive carriers to exchange traffic between their networks without using an ILEC tandem or establishing direct connections. Each competitive carrier that connects to TNDM's network gains access to all other competitive carriers' switches connected to its network. TNDM charges a per-minute rate, operates in 47 markets and carries 3.4 bln minutes of traffic per month. Unlike the ILECs, TNDM is a neutral (hence the name), third party tandem service provider and does not directly compete with its customers... Bottom Line: TNDM has first-mover advantage in all of its metro markets and has built significant scale. Unlike many telecom equipment IPO's (TNDM priced at $14 on Nov 2), Neutral Tandem is already profitable and is growing strongly as Q3 revenue rose 65% yr/yr to $22.6 mln with impressive Adjusted EBITDA margin of 32%. The Telecom Act of 1996 requires that ILECs provide access to their networks. Carriers usually accommodate, and often they become Tandem customers but sometimes carriers resist. Verizon Wireless had been refusing to allow TNDM to interconnect with it, but this week the two cos announced a settlement and Verizon Wireless is now a customer of TNDM, an important win. TNDM announced this in an 8-K not a press release, so we think few people know about the news, or about this company generally. Also, we like that the stock has held up in a weak market and it has a tiny float (6 mln shares). Mkt cap $620 mln, avg vol 211k.
  • troyhouse · 1 year ago
Yesterday was capitulation, volume was twice the daily average, culminating into a classical bottom after days of selling.
  • johnny appleseed · 1 year ago
Yeah, I know it's close and yeah I know nothing with the market is ever in stone. But the chart is telling us that we are going to get a trend changing bottom just below yesterday's lows......2300 makes for a reasonable target for the reversal print.
The wkly 200ma is the bulls last stand and apparently they're gonna take it. Theoretically the reversal off this bear exhaustion signal will be able to take us to new highs.

we shall see.......first we bounce, then we diverge, and then we reverse trend. Of course there is the question of will a bottom stick but I'm thinking it probably will. fwiw - 2850 per the system is not viewed as THE TOP of the BULL. If that holds then so will this coming bottom.

So if I haven't sold yet, now is not the time.........I'd wait for the bottom, then wait for the upside acid test that is sure to take place about 2600. If the bears failed at that point to derail the bulls, then your good to go. I suppose yesterday's telling signal shouldn't be too much of a surprise regardless of the outcome. Afterall, we are still in a BULL market till we're not anymore........lol

Personally, I'll keep my bear suit on till we diverge below yesterday's low but you can bet once we do I switch from bear to bull on this market. See my diatribe in yesterday's thread with solar fun

Sorry i hadn't post sooner. Took a nap after dinner and ended waking up 8 hours later.

    Hi Beanie,
Joined you on CME. You have a target in mind?
    Thanks in advance.
    Steve
  • beanieville · 1 year ago
not really, it's a daytrade so you take what you get. I have a feeling it's not done going down though. It probably will see 500.
  • beanieville · 1 year ago
Now if CME closed near 500 yesterday i would hold a little longer but off all numbers it closed at 544. But there is a bunch of support at 540 from last September.
  • beanieville · 1 year ago
Whoever called the overnite trade on GOOG, that was a great call.

    Thanks

Assuming we are getting a bounce here what does anyone suggest as long positions for daytrades. I am looking at DRYS,AKNS,BIDU to mention a few
  • beanieville · 1 year ago
  • beanieville · 1 year ago
both JASO and CME are now very successful overnite daytrades. You're on your own as when you want to sell it: premarket, 1st 30 minutes, or later today.

    good luck
  • beanieville · 1 year ago
JASO up $3.5 already, prudent to take 1/2 off
  • beanieville · 1 year ago
I'm looking at the charts of CME again and it may have already bottomed yesterday. Good longer term play.
  • Scibby · 1 year ago
buy MELI today. anything below 50, is a huge opportunity, the last time it was below 50 day MA it has bottomed and went up by 150%.

If this rally is powerful, this stock should double and close over 100 in a matter weeks.

Obviously I am speaking favourably of this stock because I am still holding it, as I have strong convictions that my trade will succeed.
  • ederman · 1 year ago
I would wait until Tuesday or so before jumping into MELI again, this little rally will be sold coming into next week, then I would jump in, I think we are getting close but we are not there yet
  • beanieville · 1 year ago
singh, buy out of the money calls on any morning dip, CME might be a 20 bagger for ya. Lots of 580 calls bought yesterday?

    lol
(i don't have out of money calls and i won't buy today , but the NYX news could drive the sector alot higher today)
  • sunfun · 1 year ago
Beanie what do you think about BIDU? Wow CME came down heavy...nice pick for runup..
  • beanieville · 1 year ago
it's a really really good long term buy. support at 250
  • Scibby · 1 year ago
    To Tradeking8

Question was if anyone was up in such a bad market.

On my current portfolio I am down quite heavily (as I trade options), however I must be happy that I am still up on a monthly basis

The reason is that when you make a good trade, you reward yourself by taking half of your profits out of the market.

Even if I dont need the money I withdraw the money and save them or spend them, this way you are protected from the market and when a wave bigger than you comes over, it cannot take your profits as they are locked in safely.
  • sunfun · 1 year ago
Dr.Nova wow lets hope 1000 points on DIA... I am loaded...lol

shortsqueeze..What are the best stocks right now with highest percentage of shorts? low float is better

    F8 i made 2 .5 points on SIGM...took the profits..will wait to enter again..

Bought BIDU at $258..will sell at $270

I am not buying PBW calls..can't trust solars until they rise consecuutively for 2 days
  • fortune8 · 1 year ago
You have to play with what you are comfortable with.

This is Z's 100% no brainer and I want to see how it turns out.

I did my homework last night. There are some possibilities and better odds than the lottery.

I have been trading AAPL and JASO all have been winning.

You saw my short on JASO right?

    And my buy on AAPL?

How about DRYS up 25% today?

I am about to pick up some more AAPL here as well.

Not trading much in this market.

A trade is not a trade until it is traded - f8

If you want a list of stock, then I can definitely throw those out there.

    z --

Why are you going to be like that?

And why are you so upset?

We normally on most things but we don't always have to agree on everything.

I am just reporting the news out there.

A 20% decline is not a correction. It is a beginning of a bear market.

Jan. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Small U.S. companies dropped, sending the Russell 2000 Index to its first bear market decline of 20 percent since 2002, after falling home construction and manufacturing reinforced expectations the economy will contract.
  • fortune8 · 1 year ago
I am not saying that we are going into a bear market.

I have reported that Russell 2000 is in a bear market.

A 20% decline in the index means a beginning of a bear market and not a correction.

It could be a correction or it could be a bear market. But if you don't bounce, then it is not a correction but a bear market.

Seriously, do you want the indexes to fall that much?

I would not wish for a 20% drop. Only a 10% get it over it and head on up.

Once the market deteriorates so bad, it is hard to recover.

All you need to do is look at the NASDAQ and see it has not recovered since 2000.
  • ederman · 1 year ago
Amen, F8 this is just the begining of a bear market, we may see a bounce for a couple of weeks next week but we are going DOOOWNNN
  • TV107 · 1 year ago
id be shocked if dow stays above 12K at the close
    prob go down to 11900

    its just awful out there
  • barry · 1 year ago
11300 still looks good to me.That is the 20% figure
from our high at 14100. And if everybody gets real
bullish at that level and the put/call ratios are low,
they'll take another 5% off so fast you won't believe
    it.
  • sunfun · 1 year ago
F8 are you still in SYNA?

SOLARS Are gone..get out of them or you are going to lost all of your gains
  • TV107 · 1 year ago
there isnt a single buyer anywhere
    i guess we go lower

    unreal
so far so fast and the shorts are still greedy

guess ill buy the close again

took some profits on ADS in case deal doesnt go thru
  • beanieville · 1 year ago
Alot of the shorts like Timmy Bear and Doug old man Kass have already covered, as far as weeks ago for mr. Kass. It seems like the bears are afraid of the being in the market drop even though they've been wishing for it for so long. lol

We need to change the requirements for politicians. They can't run for office until they turn at least a 40% annual profit in the market. Last night Hillary proposed freezing mortgage rates for 5 years!
    Here's Fortune magazine's response:

"such a freeze would be disastrous. Interest rates on new mortgages would skyrocket - perhaps past 8 percent, as the mutual funds, pension funds and other investors who typically provide capital to the mortgage market shift their money into other investments where the government isn't impairing returns. With higher mortgage rates eroding buying power, the downward pressure on home prices would only increase. Lower home prices would lead to even more defaults, as more folks who'd lost the equity in their homes choose to walk away from their mortgages."
    http://money.cnn.com/2008/01/16/commentary/birg...

Oh, that's right. She played cattle futures, and turned $1,000 into $100,00 back in the day. My bad . . . LOL
  • barry · 1 year ago
Hillary is BAD for the market. Now if Warren
Buffett threw his hat in the ring and got
    elected...straight up. I know he's old,but
we could probably squeeze 4 yrz out of him.
He's too smart to run though.Got a lot
more power than the Prez too !

Risky, but I am in AAPL
  • fortune8 · 1 year ago
No bottom - only support and broken support.

    SPX support is at 1325/1220.

    Believe it !!!

And look at where we closed today after breaking below it.

    Nasdaq Historical Bear Markets

The Nasdaq is now down 18.37% from highs reached on 10/31/07. A bear market occurs when the price declines by 20% or more after previously rallying by 20% or more. While it's not yet a foregone conclusion that the Nasdaq will turn into a bear, it's getting very close, and investors should be prepared for what the typical bear looks like. Since the Nasdaq index was created back in 1971, it has suffered 13 bear markets. The average bear has been 216 days long for an average decline of 36.51%. Only 4 out of the 13 bears saw declines of less than 30%, and 4 bears saw losses of more than 40%.

    You don't want a 20% correction.

  • johnny appleseed · 1 year ago
Based on what? Your gut? oex? the fact that we plummet every afternoon??lol

read my post wayyyy down below.
  • jarred · 1 year ago
    good post wayyyy down below.

my comment was based on the day's action - up big off huge futures, then dwindles leading up to W's stimulus pep talk, and then starts dropping, and can't seem to establish any sort of "footing". we'll see. after yesterday, i thought there would be a huge rally today with bargain hunters and short covering, but so far, those people don't outnumber the sellers and the shorts aren't covering.
  • johnny appleseed · 1 year ago
I hear ya, the dreaded afternoon selloff...almost like cloackwork.

SOLF is going to 13 again..it is broken..

Z ...PBW will be tossed.. FSLR and SPWR are going to down...

    solar sale pretty soon...
  • CTRADES · 1 year ago
I believe solars will see another 15-18% down before they bottom. Not saying they arent worth what they are trading at just they are speculative stocks that were over bought and will be oversold.
    Looking for entries at
    CSIQ 14-15
    SPWR 58-62
    FSLR 128-135
    GEX 39-40
  • beanieville · 1 year ago
We didn't get a decent WYNN short today, but i'm pretty sure we'll get it next week.
  • sunfun · 1 year ago
Lets rally in the last 30 minutes ...damn it is better to be short every day..

Switching side to Long is not helping
